"We learned labour attraction strategies, and strategies."
The first-ever "SPARK THE NORTH" event was successfully hosted by Community Futures Lesser Slave Lake Region in partnership with Big Lakes County, and Alberta Labour and Immigration.
The Labour Solutions Summit was held on Thursday, May 26, 2022, at Triangle Hall, in High Prairie, Alberta.
More than 50 business owners, executives, entrepreneurs, human resource professionals, and municipal leaders from different industries attended the event to receive the proven solutions needed to attract top talents and enhance workforce development. The guests included representation from Alberta Health Services, Northern Lakes College, public officials/councilors, and local business owners. They all positively said that they took away a lot of proven strategies, out-of-the-box ideas, ways to recruit, strategies, and methodologies that they can use in their organization.
The World Café was well-received by all the guests; they actively participated and went from group to group. Attendees took time to share their ideas on the topics presented by the Keynote Speakers Eric Termuende, Kristen Cumming, and Sheila Newel. Discussions took place on recruitment ideas, perks & benefits, challenges, and organizational cultures. CF staff collected this information and is planning to distribute the results to the attendees.
The success of the Labour Solutions Summit has 'sparked' Community Futures Lesser Slave Lake Region to plan an annual Spark The North event focusing on different economic and business challenges that are specific to operating businesses in our Northern Alberta region.

Keynote Speaker: Kristen Cumming
Kristen Cumming's life work is focused on improving the connection between people and their work. Her twenty years of experience in career development and human resources is complemented by a passion for demography. Demography is a powerful tool to explore workforce trends due to its relative stability and predictability. She has the ability to connect with audiences by researching each organization and audience so that her presentation is relevant for each attendee. Kristen shows that one of the most predictable forces of change facing organizations now is that change itself is happening at an increasingly rapid pace. Organizations are challenged to keep pace and make decisions with both agility and clarity to remain competitive in an increasingly turbulent business environment. This is the time to engage the breadth and depth of the learning capacity within an organization. Leading, therefore, must be centered on the ability to steward the learning of teams and individuals.
