Meet Maria Khan, an inspiring entrepreneur who has made impressive strides in just two years. As the proud owner of Fas Gas in both Athabasca and Slave Lake, Maria didn’t stop at one success. She has since expanded her business portfolio to include not one, but three thriving ventures all within two years.

One of her most celebrated ventures is Delhi to Lahore Restaurant, an Indian and Pakistani restaurant located in the heart of Slave Lake. The restaurant serves up authentic South Asian cuisine, all Halal-certified, and made with heart. From rich, aromatic curries and flavour-packed barbecues to comforting street-style snacks, Delhi to Lahore offers something for every craving whether it’s bold and spicy or simple and satisfying.

With a focus on real flavours, generous portions, and genuinely warm service, the restaurant has quickly become known in the community. Guests can choose to dine-in, take out, or order for delivery making it easy to enjoy their delicious offerings however they prefer.

Maria’s motivation to start the restaurant stemmed from a noticeable gap in the community: "There weren’t many dining options in Slave Lake, especially none offering South Asian or halal cuisine. I believed the people of Slave Lake deserved more choices and something new," she shared.

Her journey into entrepreneurship wasn’t without its challenges. One of the biggest hurdles was securing funding. After being declined by three to four banks due to the perceived risks of opening a restaurant in a small town, Maria met Ali Mouallem, owner of Alimo’s Pizza - who referred her to Community Futures Lesser Slave Lake. That introduction changed everything.

Community Futures Business Analyst Robin-Lee Vance, took the time to understand my vision, my plan, and the need within the community. They believed in what I was trying to build,” said Maria. “Thanks to their support, I was able to open my restaurant and bring something new to Slave Lake.”

Maria encourages other aspiring entrepreneurs to connect with Community Futures:

“Even if you're not looking for a business loan, they offer amazing resources, workshops, and events that can really support your journey. Don’t hesitate, just start.”

With a background in retail and an eye for opportunity, Maria Khan’s story shows what’s possible when determination meets the right support. We’re proud to have walked alongside her on this journey and we’re excited to see where her passion and hard work take her next.

We’re proud to have played a part in her journey and can’t wait to see what she builds next.
